This week on #WhiskeyAndAfterMASH we talk about Ses1 Ep 16 - It Had to Be You where Dr. Boyer gets an unexpected morale and ego boost from Radar's jilted Intended-To-Be. Meanwhile, we watch as the Potters, Klingers, and Fr. Mulcahy try to console Radar about seemingly bad knews about the future Mrs. O'Reilley, Sandy. Then, in Ses 1 Ep 17 - Odds and Ends we watch as Max does his best to earn $500 so that he and Soon Li can be ready for their new baby. Bob Skinnel ends up helping them in the end with a gift of $500 that he just had lying around. He didn't realize that, though, until Fr. Mulcahy pointed it out while the two were working out Bob's new will before he went in for another surgery.

This week we talk about Ses 1 Ep 14, CYA, and Ses 1 Ep 15, Yours Truly, Max Klinger, both of which still seem to suffer from the symptom of trying to fit too much plot into too little time. That said, the plots moved at a good pace and were well written.

This week on #WhiskeyAndAfterMASH we talk about Season 1, Ep 12 (All About Christmas Eve) where there are six different plot threads. They include: Alma Cox finally feeling appreciated by Mike D'Angelo then feeling betrayed, turning her ire on Klinger; Father Mulcahy getting a donation of a 12 inch TV set from a department store; an ulcer patient arriving at General General who (as a separate plot) helps Dr. Pfiffer find his holiday spirit; another patient arriving who thinks his wife is cheating on him; and Klinger and Soon Lee finding out they are pregnant. In Season 1 Ep 13 (Chief of Staff) there are only about four plots including: D'Angelo getting a prostate operation; Cox feeling first finally appreciated by Mike, then rejected; Nurse Coleman, a black nurse, arriving at General General and her failed trial under fire; Pvt. Bob and another patient fighting over a (married) elder nurse; Potter's office being redecorated by Klinger and Mulcahy with his gear from the 4077th. Both were very dense, but Chief of Staff was, by far, the more viewable episode.

Whiskey And AfterMASH: Ep 04 - Bladder Fallout

This week we talk about episode 10 (11?), Fallout, and 11 (12?), Bladder Day Saints. These two episodes feel like After MASH is starting to hit its stride in how they handle plots in the episodes. At most, Bladder Day Saints has two plots about vets with bladder issues getting checkups as well as another about the 1% case of a guy who wants attention and his VA benefits. But Fallout has, essentially, a single plot about the poisons that soldiers are exposed to (WWI - gas; WWII - radiation) in the government's fight for Victory. These are good, but Fallout still seems to try too hard to be a comedy when it needn't have been.

This week I promised to include the title of Winchester's records: Kindertotenlieder by Gustav Mahler. First up this week is Ses 11 Ep 13 - Friends and Enemies, wherein an old Army buddy of Col. Potter's ends up in the care of the 4077th when he tried to help out an infantry unit. Also, BJ, who is laid up with an ingrown toenail, tries to sew discord between Margaret and Charles. Next, in Ep 14, Give and Take, we watch as Charles pawns off Charity Collection Officer duty, only to end up with it literally falling back in his lap, while a GI in Post-Op is forced to come face to face with his preconceptions of the enemy.

This week we begin the last season of MASH (sad panda) with Episodes 1 (Hey, Look Me Over) and 2 (Trick or Treatment). In Episode 1 we see Nurse Kelleye get the spotlight she deserves for being in a total of 178 episodes of M*A*S*H. She confronts Hawkeye after he unsuccessfully attempts to seduce nurses right in front of Kelleye. Also, there's a minor subplot about the OR being a shambles and a nurse-Colonel inspector coming to see how Margaret handles herself after a bug-out scenario. In Episode 2 we watch at the 4077th is inundated with unexpected casualties as they are gearing up for a Halloween party. During this the staff share ghost stories, Charles deals with self-inflicted wounds of Marines, Hawk helps a soldier get on the road to mental health, and Fr. Mulcahy saves a life while performing Last Rites.

Whiskey And MASH: Ep 119 - This Darn Kid

Next, in That Darn Kid, we watch as Rizo cons Winchester out of a month's pay while Potter and Klinger work together to keep Hawk from being in debt to the US Army for the rest of his natural life.

Hint on that second one: it involves Hawk making a monument, and then using prima-cord.

Whiskey And MASH: Ep 103 - Operation the Fifth

This week we discuss two episodes from season 9, Taking the Fifth (ep 9) and Operation Friendship (ep 10). In Taking the Fifth we see the plot revolve around 757 mL of Bordeaux as Charles seeks more and Hawkeye seeks to trade his bottle for pleasure of the flesh. In Operation Friendship we watch as Charles plays hand servant to Klinger after he saves Charles from near certain death at the hands of the autoclave while BJ is knocked to his caboose by the same device, ending up in his hand suffering a compartment hemmoraghe which nearly ends his surgical career.

This week we're covering three episodes from Season 8: ep 23, War Co-respondent; ep 24, Back Pay; ep 25, April Fools. In War Cor-respondent, we see BJ develop a crush that temps him as closely as he was in Season 5's episode "Hanky Panky." However, BJ keeps himself from losing his lifeline home to Peg and Millvalley. Hawk, for his part, keeps after the reporter Aggie O'Shea as much as she is hounding after BJ. Next, in episode 24 Hawkeye attempts to bill the Army for services rendered as a doctor is doing back in Minneapolis while Charles plays professor a gorup of three Korean doctors. In the end Hawkeye doesn't get his compensation and the Korean doctors do help Charles with his back problems. Finally, in April Fools, we watch as Col. Potter pulls the grand-daddy of April Fools pranks on his senior staff while they play at child versions amongst themselves.

This week on the show we review Season 8 Episode 11, Life Time, and Season 8 Episode 12, Dear Uncle Abdul. In Life Time we watch as Hawkeye works feverishly from the chopper pad through the operating room to save a young man who has had a large portion of his aorta shot away. In doing so Hawkeye and BJ work together to keep from paralyzing the man while finding a sufficiently large graft to repair his heart. IN Episode 12, Dear Uncle Abdul, we see a lull in the action at the 4077th which invariablely means zany antics including Col. Potter using Klinger as a body double on Sophie, BJ and Hawkeyke having a running joke-off, Charles using Klinger as a bird dog, and Margaret seeking a replacement to her footlocker "that gave its life, that I might live."

This week we watch and review two very whitty episodes. First, in season 8 episode 9 (Mr. and Mrs. Who?) we see what happens when Charles goes on a bender in Tokyo as well as what the doctors finally do to try to treat hemmorraghic fever. Next, in season 8 episode 10 (The Yalu Brick Road) we watch as the 4077th goes down with salmonella poisoning from Thanksgiving Turkey. The Majors and Mulcahy try to keep the camp in clean sheets while the Captains make their way back to camp with their prisoner, Ralphie, who saves them from a North Korean patrol.

Later (after our podcast-recording program randomly stops and forces us to frantically save the file, then restart), in Period of Adjustment, we watch the fallout from Klinger being constantly compared to and measured up against Radar as well as BJ's reaction to hearing that his daughter, Erin, called Radar "daddy."

In this episode we discuss Goodbye Rader, season 8 episodes 4 & 5. In this two-part episode of M*A*S*H we see Radar return from leave to find that the 4077th's generator has blown and that Klinger, who was filling in for him, was unable to get a replacement. Later, Radar finds out that his Uncle Ed has died, at which point Col. Potter gives him a hardship discharge. Reluctant to go home, Radar ultimately capitulates after Klinger finagles a generator. After saying goodbye to everyone as they're going into OR, Radar heads home, leaving his teddy bear behind on Hawkeye's bunk. Goodbye Radar, we'll miss you.

In "Are you now, Margaret?" we see perhaps a portion of what it would have been like to live through the McCarthyism, Red Scare ear of American History where everyone was suspect as a Communist Sympathizer.

By the end of th episode, though, everything is back to how it started (and Klinger and Charles drunkenly sing "Stormy Weather" together). In Episode 26 BJ plans a big reunion party for all the families of the 4077 staff at The Pierre in New York. Afterward, they all get letters telling how great the event was.

This week we do an extended podcast (3 episodes). In the first, we see what happens after Margaret gets her final divorce decree as well as what Radar attempts to catch the eye of a new nurse (Ses 7 Ep 20 - Hot Lips is Back in Town). In the second, the 4077th is being shelled. To avoid being hit, Potter orders the camp to move its operations (not a bug-out though) to a nearby cave. We find out that Hawkeye suffers from claustrophobia and that Margaret is afraid of loud noises, such as the sound of shells exploding (Ses 7 Ep 21 - C*A*V*E). Lastly, we see the last appearance in the series of Col. Flagg as he investigates Hawkeye as a Pinko Commie lover. Specifically, Hawkeye took a North Korean soldier before an American soldier. The American soldier's buddy comes to the Swamp to express his displeasure with Hawkeye's choice (Ses 7 Ep 22 - Rally 'Round the Flagg, Boys).

This week, to get us back on track for episode numbering, we tackle three episodes: Ses 7 Eps 11 (Point of View), 12 (Dear Comrade), and 13 (Out of Gas). In Point of View we're treated to an episode filmed entirely from the perspective of a soldier, Pvt. Rich, who is wounded and brought to the 4077th. In Dear Comrade the North Korean army sends a spy into the 4077th to try to find out how they achieve their efficiency in treating patients. The episode is done in the vein of "Dear Dad" episodes. Finally, in Out of Gas, the 4077th runs out of sodium pentathol, an anesthetic, when Sgt. Zale trades away part of their supply to the 8063rd for plasma. Fr. Mulcahy goes out and gets more from the Black Market, though Charles loses a case of wine (and his polar suit) in the process.

In this, our 51st episode (almost 52! Gah!) we talk a lot about Margaret. In our first episode (Ses 5 Ep 5 - The Nurses) we see Margaret deal with her nurses while in an agitated state over not being welcome in their late night activities. Gloria provides some very good insights and observations about this episode that I would never have picked up. In The Abduction of Margaret Houlihan (Ses 5 Ep 6), we see the 4077th disrupted as Margaret goes missing when she helps a local Korean woman deliver a baby. Hilarity insues when Col. Flagg shows up to "help."

This week we encounter two episodes that are, perhaps, the two best episodes of the season: Ses 4 ep 23 Deluge and Ses 4 Ep 24 The Interview. Both Chris and Gloria higly encourage you to watch these two episodes in order. And, in terms of an entry point to M*A*S*H, these two episodes are a great place to start. In Deluge we watch as the 4077th is inundated by wounded as a timeline reset puts them back in 1950 (and the front of a Chinese advance). Also, in The Interview we see the actors respond in character to questions as an interviewer might pose during the first years of the Korean Conflict.
